Abstract

As the FreePint Topic Series: Beyond Aggregation continues, series producer Andrew Grave takes a look at the how some of the aggregators continue to innovate against the backdrop of the changes with Factiva and DJX. He looks at product developments in Eureka.cc, Meltwater Buzz and Newsdesk with new options now available for social media monitoring, collaboration and current awareness.

Beyond AggregationMuch attention on the subject of news aggregation has been focused on the changes that Dow Jones has been making to its core Factiva offering. Tim Buckley Owen recently discussed our readers’ concerns with Dow Jones' Georgene Huang.

Whilst the changes to Factiva are very significant, all providers continue to innovate in the competitive aggregation field and our supplier Q&As are a good way to understand their strategies. We have five more scheduled: Acquire Media (NewsEdge), Attensa, Comintelli, M-Brain and Northern Light.

To understand how vendors’ strategies feed through to their products, our product reviews are an essential read.

In her review of Eureka.cc, Anne Jordan reported on its new optional module which allows uses to pull in content from Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube by setting up saved searches which port content into the product.

Media monitoring company Meltwater has adopted a different approach to social media. Alongside its traditional news product, Meltwater News, it has developed Meltwater Buzz which analyses social media. Content is pulled from seven key social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Reviewer Jan Knight concluded that those in PR, social media and marketing would need both Meltwater News and Buzz to cover all bases.

Penny Crossland found that Moreover’s Newsdesk has evolved from a news aggregator into a collaborative current awareness tool. Subscribers are able to add comments to articles, email articles to colleagues or share links via Twitter and Yammer.
