As FreePint’s current newsletter points out, business information on all things related to China is very much top of the agenda. So when the University of Michigan’s China Data Centre alerted us to updated publications on their China Data Online service, we thought this was an opportune time to report on it.
The China Data Centre at Ann Arbor in fact concentrates its research efforts on integrating social and natural science data and promoting research in spatial studies. However, the China Data Online service also contains useful business information for information professionals.
Produced in collaboration with All China Marketing Research Co, China Data Online provides access to macroeconomic data, as well as population, economic, agricultural and industrial statistics. The statistic and census databases have recently been updated and now provide access to more than 4,200 statistical yearbooks and Census collections. Census data goes back to 1987, while the new yearbook interface provides detailed statistics on the Chinese population, the economy and the industry split by province, city and the country as a whole.
For those of us more interested in current news, China Data Online does have a news service providing information on newly released macroeconomic news, as supplied by the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics.
The service is not a sophisticated database, unlike ISI’s CEIC China or EMIS China services – reviewed in this month’s VIP Magazine – however university or college libraries are able to apply for one free single user account, which will be of interest to our subscribers in academic libraries.
ACMR, China Data Centre’s partner, also collaborates with ISI Emerging Markets on its Chinese databases, providing industry reports on a variety of sectors. Follow the link to read a review of ISI’s CEIC China and EMIS China products. The current VIP Magazine also includes a review of BvD’sChina Connect.
