This week the Software & Information Industry Association held its annual NetGain conference, bringing together executives in the content industry for a day of high level presentations on content innovations, followed by a "road trip" to visit content vendors in the field. For the first time, NetGain was held in Boston, so stops on the road trip included the MIT Media Lab, the Boston Globe, and Thomson Reuters.

One of the NetGain highlights is always the "Preview Company" sessions, in which young companies in the content industry - this year, in keeping with the conference's location, all  are from the Boston region - are invited to provide a five minute overview showing how they will shake up the content world. This year five companies made the cut: Pubget, Cambridge Semantics, Yesware, RAMP and ImageRights International.

Pubget has been on our radar as a subject for a LiveWire mini review; the STM vendor simplifies scientific research by streamlining the process of finding, managing and analyzing scientific papers. Yesware also tackles workflow integration with its "email for salespeople" platform, making it easier for sales reps to close business.

Both Cambridge Semantics and RAMP are tackling search and discovery with their products, albeit from different angles. Cambridge Semantics gives business users the ability to access data sources on their own terms and in their own language, while RAMP is a Content Optimization SaaS platform, supporting publishers in their efforts to drive increased discovery across search and social sites, enhance user engagement through dynamic search and publishing solutions, and maximize revenue through sophisticated advertising capabilities.

Finally, ImageRights offers a solution of increasing importance to enterprises who are increasingly diversifying their content assets from text to mutltimedia- the ability to protect images from copyright infringement. As we begin work on a series of compliance products in the marketplace for VIP, image copyright compliance tools will be part of what we look for.
