It would seem that Springer Science + Business Media’s acquisition by private equity firms EQT and GIC at the end of last year (see Tim Buckley Owen’s posting on the subject at http://www.vivavip.com/go/e27457 ) was a good move. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength. At the time, Berlin-based Springer stated that the express aim of the deal was to further develop its e-strategy ( http://digbig.com/5bbpjp), and expand its portfolio of scientific books. The company’s e-strategy was boosted in February, when it launched AuthorMapper (http://www.authormapper.com), a free analytical online tool for detecting trends and finding experts in scientific research. The tool allows users to search for content from Springer’s entire portfolio, including from BioMed Central journals. According to Springer(http://digbig.com/5bbpjn) , content consists of more than three million articles and 742,000 chapters from 29,000 eBooks. A valuable tool for scientists and researchers. Earlier this month, Springer (http://www.springer.com) acquired the book contracts portfolio from UK-based scientific publisher Praxis Publishing. The two firms have had a co-publishing agreement since 1998. Springer intends to carry on producing Praxis titles, which, according to the accompanying press release (http://digbig.com/5bbpjm) specializes in scientific areas where advances and discoveries are being made. Also in May, Springer announced the opening of a Middle East Office at the International Media Production Zone (IMPZ) in Dubai, providing the publisher with access to the expanding Middle East, African and South Asian markets. It already has offices in HongKong and Beijing.
