The January issue of VIP Magazine (No. 74) contains a review of Newsdesk, a business intelligence tool using online news and social media content to provide current awareness and media monitoring services, from Moreover Technologies. Newsdesk tracks around 32,000 news sources, over 300,000 blog sites and other social media sources. It does not license content, but rather provides links to the original source on the web, using a business model often described as 'web scraping'. In the UK, aggregators who 'scrape' content will need to be licensed with the Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) from January 2010, and the issues surrounding this are covered in a LiveWire posting by Tim Buckley Owen at http://digbig.com/5bapjw. With the NLA launching its own eClipsweb aggregator and the ongoing debate about free vs fee in the online news space, this is certainly a hot topic and one to watch in 2010. Newsdesk can be used for undertaking ad hoc research with results viewed by clicking the link or emailed on to colleagues. However, the archive only extends 2 months and this is not the focus of the product. It is far more powerful for accessing breaking news and online content, as a current awareness or media monitoring tool. RSS feeds can be used to create personalised news portals or published directly to an intranet or public-facing internet site. Alternatively, create email alerts or customised newsletters. Moreover Technologies, Inc. (http://w.moreover.com/) was founded in 1998 as Moreover.com. The company was acquired by VeriSign in 2005 and renamed Real-Time Publisher Services, but sold back to a private investor group in May 2009. The new owners intend to help the company 'innovate and expand its industry leading news and information aggregation, distribution and tracking services'. There is certainly a lot of activity in product development, with the number of sources increasing rapidly (particularly social media sources), and improved technological capabilities, as the company works towards integrating news and social media searching. The VIP review provides examples of Newsdesk being used on the web so readers can see the product output 'live'.
