Abstract

The Special Libraries Association (SLA) has announced its forthcoming dissolution, after 116 years of professionalism, advocacy and networking for special librarians and information managers around the world.

I reflect on this sad news, and offer our thoughts and support for everyone associated with SLA.

It was with considerable sadness that we have learned of the upcoming dissolution of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). See the announcement here.

For 116 years, SLA has been a cornerstone of professional development, networking, and advocacy for specialist librarians and information managers around the world.

I cannot overstate the positive impact SLA has had on the profession, and the individuals within it.

Jinfo has had numerous collaborations with SLA and individual members down the years. I was also a long-standing member, SLA Fellow, former European Chapter President and chair of the 2021 Chapter conference.

SLA made a significant contribution to the information landscape, and its absence will undoubtedly be felt by many people.

Despite this news, Jinfo believes the skills and expertise of information professionals remain as crucial as ever. There will always be a need for strategic insight into licensing, managing, and using information in complex organisations.

To all SLA members and supporters, Jinfo extends our support during this difficult time, and our appreciation for your contributions to the profession.

During this moment of change, Jinfo remains committed to supporting information professionals as they shape the future.
