How can you give yourself the best possible chance for success? Our research shows early wins and quick successes after a role transition are increasingly impactful on long term success in the new position. It is imperative to get up to speed quickly and understand where and how you can apply your skills in an effective manner. So what do you need to do this? Most people interview those with whom they will be interacting quickly on as they transition. But are they asking the right questions? Are they interviewing the right people? Think about what you needed in your last role to be effective. You needed to have the knowledge of how the organization works. Not just the org chart but how that chart is applied in day to day life. How are decisions made and by whom? What information is critical to decision making for your new leadership? What hidden expectations does the organization have for this role? You also need to understand how relationships work and which relationships are critical to meeting your goals and objectives, as well as enhancing your career path. Who did your predecessor work with internally and externally? How were those interactions structured? In addition to the technical or scientific skills you need for the work you are doing, do not forget to understand the culture, the values, the contextual history which underpin your new role. Respectfully ask the questions which provide a view of these issues. Ask who else will be influential in your success. Do not assume you know the answer by reviewing the organizational structure.
